Business Analytics Skills In Demand by Employers

Babson College has launched new Business Analytics concentrations in the undergraduate and graduate programs, offering students a variety of courses in data management, analytics techniques, and applications of analytics and Big Data in business. “Soon every business organization will be an analytics-focused organization so as to be more competitive and to improve marketplace performance,” said Babson’s Undergraduate Dean Scott Moore. “Babson’s new concentrations include processes to help students collect, validate, organize, and analyze data so they can make better business decisions through analytics as well as through intuition.”

Employers are demanding graduates with business analytics skills. Ninety-one percent of business practitioners said they would hire graduates with business analytics skills and 60 percent would pay more than a 10 percent premium over non-analytics graduates, according to a 2012 Babson survey. Employers recognize the importance of hiring analytically-savvy business professionals skilled in understanding and interpreting sophisticated data, said Cheri Paulson, Director of Babson’s Graduate Center for Career Development. “An employee with business analytics mastery will be invaluable to the company. This is a ‘sweet spot’ for Babson students shaped from the moment they step foot on campus to become entrepreneurial leaders who can identify and create opportunities.” Babson’s undergraduate and graduate concentrations require a combination of prerequisites, core courses, and electives designed to give students a deep and well-rounded understanding of business analytics and its applications. The concentrations are already enjoying popularity among undergraduate and graduate students during this initial rollout.

Undergraduate Concentration

Students can tailor the concentration to their interests by following one of four paths: Functional Depth, Marketing Analytics, Financial Analytics, or Industry Sectors.

· Students can also create a “self-designed” trajectory allowing the flexibility of choosing from a list of electives that can apply to analytics applications that are of interest to them.

· All students must take a total of six courses for the councentration (two pre-requisites, one core concentration course, and three electives). Graduate Concentration Available to all MBA students - one-year, two-year, evening, and Babson Blended Learning program. There are categories of requirements each student must complete:

· Foundation - Provides students with an introduction to data management, an overview of data analytics techniques and applications, and exposure to software used for data analytics.

· Application - Allows students the opportunity to apply concepts to functional areas such as marketing and economic and financial forecasting.

· Depth - Broad range of electives giving students the opportunity to explore business analytics applications.

· A minimum of 12 credits must be taken from a list of electives in functional areas such as Business Intelligence, Data Mining, Marketing Analytics, Economic and Financial Forecasting, and Information Technology.

The faculty coordinators and advisors for the business analytics concentrations are:

Dessislava Pachamanova and Steven Gordon (undergraduate)

Abdul Ali and Dessislava Pachamanova (graduate)

The business analytics concentrations were created based on input from a core group of industry partners, Babson staff (Cheri Paulson – Graduate CCD and Megan Houlker – Undergraduate CCD), as well as faculty from across functional areas and divisions (Abdul Ali – Marketing, Yunwei Gai – Economics, Steven Gordon – Technology and Operations Management, Bala Iyer – Technology and Operations Management, Dessislava Pachamanova – Mathematics and Science, and James Wilson – Babson Executive Education).
