Stress and burnout are not the same thing. And while we know that stress often leads to burnout, it’s possible to handle the onslaught of long hours, high pressure, and work crises in a way that safeguards you from the emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and a lack of confidence in one’s abilities that characterizes burnout. The key is tapping into your emotional intelligence.

The States That College Graduates Are Most Likely to Leave The New York Times

This year’s election has forced Americans to take notice of class divisions between workers. And while these divisions may at first ring of lazy stereotypes — the rural Rust Belt worker without a college degree and the coastal urban college-educated worker — they’re rooted in a real dynamic. Many of the most skilled workers — young people with college degrees — are leaving struggling regions of America for cities, specifically for cities in Southern and coastal states.

For most of the past 25 years, globalisation was seen as an unstoppable force, as sure to advance as the sun rises in the east. But increasingly, it looks more vulnerable than inexorable. Causes for concern are easy to find. For instance, the last set of World Trade Organisation negotiations over further trade liberalization, the Doha Round, was a failure; Donald J. Trump has disavowed free trade agreements such as NAFTA and the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP); Brexit will reduce economic integration between the United Kingdom and the European Union, and possibly between the U.K. and the world; and regional opposition almost scuppered the Canada-EU Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). Is the age of globalisation coming to an end?

As this missive is published I’m in China. I’m sorry to be missing out on feasting with family and friends, not so sorry to be missing the shopping extravaganza where many feast on others’ spending.

Thinking about Thanksgiving, this uniquely American holiday, got me musing about how it’s a celebration of immigrants.

The first Thanksgiving was a 3 day event the Pilgrims held in 1621. According to Edwin Winslow…who was there…it was attended by 90 Native Americans and 53 Pilgrims. I hear a good time was had by all.

From savings to banking to investing… finance is moving online. With this, we’re seeing the disruption of venture capital brought about by new laws that may change the game for how entrepreneurs can raise funding and who can invest.

As the CEO of equity investment platform Crowdfunder.com, I was part of a small leadership group engaged on JOBS Act legislation in Washington D.C. and helped bring about new equity crowdfunding laws in the U.S.

Maps have an emotional resonance that have made them an enduring part of our art and culture for most of history. Even the ubiquity of Google Maps couldn't kill the map obsession: maps as artwork, maps that chart a place’s psychic quality, or expose an interesting history, seem to be enjoying greater popularity than ever.

In my last column, I tried to gauge what candidates Trump and Clinton might do to strengthen our innovation economy, which is vital to raising people’s living standards and enhancing American competitiveness. But now that the election is behind us, it’s time to focus on what President-Elect Trump should do to boost innovation.

Eagle Bird Bird Of Prey Expensive Natural

While we all look forward to the prospect of pizza being delivered by drones, not everyone is loving the flying gadgets. Birds of prey don't particularly like them. At all.

Surveyor Rick Steven, has had to contend with some angsty local eagles while flying his unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) at the St Ives mine, located in Western Australia's Goldfields region.

In short, they're destroying them, and it's forcing Steven to get inventive.

MADISON – Rural America was thrown a Depression lifeline in the 1930s when the federal government rallied to spread electric power across farm country. Not long after came affordable rural telephone service, even if it was delivered through a black "party line" phone hanging on the kitchen wall.

The modern equivalent is broadband, generally described as high-speed connections to the internet. After lagging in broadband capacity for years, rural Wisconsin may finally be poised to catch up.

The breakthrough is largely a result of the second Connect America Fund, which tasked the Federal Communications Commission to work directly with major providers who promised to deliver high-quality service in underserved – mostly rural – areas.

Imagine a colleague sitting across from you. She just got leveled over instead of being promoted into the role herself. She’s seething. For months, her manager wasn’t open with her about why she wasn’t considered for the role and what she needed to get promoted. Instead, he avoided having a difficult conversation and pushed it off, optimizing for his own comfort. And now his report has come to you, the head of people operations, seeking answers or a resolution. What do you say?

Dollar Exchange Rate World Economy Boom Economy

As one programs any financing, as in corporate finance generally, the objective is to make 2 + 2 = 5; that is to obtain added value for the issuer. In the course of a financing, the insiders are attempting to raise the maximum amount of money for the minimum amount of equity (“equity” meaning claims on the residual values of the firm after its creditors have been satisfied). A corporation will issue at least one class of common stock because it must; many firms stop there; they pursue the simplest capital structure possible in accordance with the KISS principle (“Keep it Simple, Stupid”).

Being an entrepreneur is a fashionable thing these days. Frequently I am introduced to people who are exploring getting into the startup world. Having just celebrated only the third birthday of my own startup, I’m no expert in the topic of entrepreneurship. Yet I love these conversations about career changes and exploring entrepreneurship, because it often highlights the multi-faceted discussion of what entrepreneurship is about.

Picture of President Kennedy in the limousine in Dallas, Texas, on Main Street, minutes before the assassination. Also in the presidential limousine are Jackie Kennedy, Texas Governor John Connally, and his wife, Nellie.

It is the most famous home movie ever, and the most carefully studied image, an 8-millimeter film that captured the death of a President. The movie is just as well known for what many say it does or does not reveal, and its existence has fostered countless conspiracy theories about that day in Dallas. But no one would argue that what it shows is not utterly heartbreaking, the last moments of life of the youthful and charismatic John Fitzgerald Kennedy as he rode with his wife Jackie through Dealey Plaza. Amateur photographer Abraham Zapruder had eagerly set out with his Bell & Howell camera on the morning of November 22, 1963, to record the arrival of his hero. Yet as Zapruder filmed, one bullet struck Kennedy in the back, and as the President’s car passed in front of Zapruder, a second one hit him in the head.

building

Of all the challenges I've faced as the head of a startup, learning how to let go of things while growing fast has been one of the toughest. In the early stages, every founder is a master of all trades—there's no other way to get off the ground. But as your company scales, it's important to let go of some of those responsibilities.

This is something startup CEOs and founders hear all the time, but "Just delegate!" is a far cry from practical advice. So here's a look at the five key activities I've had to learn how to let go of, and what it took for me to relinquish control.

If you were to ask a healthcare investor what their investment strategy is, it is likely the product of some brilliant foresight, a little luck, and some lessons learned from bad experiences or near misses.

In a series of phone and email interviews, we picked the brains of health IT investors at four firms. We asked them what they learned from early investments and how those lessons and insights informed their strategy going forward. One theme that threads its way through the investment narrative of these companies is that technology is all well and good, but you need a service to support it as well.
