New research from Miguel Brendl of the Kellog School of Management, Andrea Bonezzi, and Matteo De Angelis examines the psychological reasons for this behavior. It's all about frames of reference. When somebody first embarks on something, it's easy to see how much progress has been made relative to the start, keeping motivation high. People get more motivated near completion as well, as the end's in sight.
