Google is one of the world's most attractive employers. Its prestige alone is enough to attract the masses--never mind its above-average salaries, office spaces that resemble some of the best hotels with professionally-designed spaces, on-site restaurants, fitness centers, and massages. But it's not just its office spaces, free food, or clout that keeps Googlers happy in their roles. In fact, it's something most would guess would send staff running.

Economists predict we are headed into a recession by the second quarter of 2023. During a recession economic growth stalls, which can lead to layoffs and hiring slowdowns. It may become more difficult to find a job. Investments lose value and lenders tighten the reins, making it harder to take out a loan.

This paints a gloomy picture, but there are some benefits to a recession … if you’re prepared.

There’s a common complaint in the workplace today: Employees’ schedules are often so packed with meetings that they have no time to do their actual jobs.

Back in 2017, 71% of senior managers said that meetings were unproductive and inefficient; 65% reported that they got in the way of completing tasks. Since 2020, the problem has gotten worse. Research shows that with the rise of remote work, employees are spending more time in meetings and the workday has been extended by more than 45 minutes.

The GCEC is made up of more than 250 leading university entrepreneurship programs working together not only to share best practices and develop programs and initiatives, but also to collaborate and help each other advance, strengthen and celebrate the role universities fulfill in educating the entrepreneurs of tomorrow. The Rice Alliance for Technology and Entrepreneurship at Rice University’s Jones Graduate School of Business in Houston is the global headquarters for the GCEC.

Amid our global energy transition, corporations and governments are conscientiously building pathways to decarbonize our energy sources. These efforts hinge on how readily we embrace renewable energy sources, yet even renewable-based technologies require a massive input of materials, including metals and minerals. Conversely, they are more material intensive than traditional fossil-fuel-based systems, which creates a vital caveat in the global push to decarbonize.

Duke Energy Corp. and four other major Southeast power companies have joined a coalition with leadership from Ohio-based Battelle to pursue federal financial support for a six-state Southeast Hydrogen Hub.

On Sept. 22, the U.S. Department of Energy opened applications for $7 billion worth of federal funding to develop six to 10 regional hydrogen hubs in the United States. The money will be invested in developing a web of “green hydrogen” production sites that will use zero-carbon electricity resources to manufacture hydrogen as well as “blue hydrogen” produced from gas-fired electricity with carbon capture and storage.

Once the heart of office life, the fax machine could soon fall silent forever. The UK's telecoms regulator Ofcom is considering whether to remove facsimile or 'fax' services from the list of technologies that it requires telecoms companies to support.

The proposed change would amend the current universal service obligation (USO), which was written into UK law in 2003, when faxing was still a popular communications method.

PitchBook's annual university rankings compare schools by tallying up the number of alumni entrepreneurs who have founded venture capital-backed companies. The undergraduate and graduate rankings are powered by PitchBook data and are based on an analysis of more than 144,000 VC-backed founders.

So many entrepreneurs are stuck before they begin. They don’t know where to start, they don’t know what to do. They know what a growing and successful business looks like because they see them everywhere, but what about one in its infancy? They’re not short of motivation; they simply don’t know how to apply it.

I asked entrepreneurs to tell me what they would do first, if they were starting from scratch. Their responses fell into four categories: decide on your business idea, get ultra familiar with their target audience, set up for success and then enlist the help of a mentor. Here are the details.

A little more than half of the sun’s energy that reaches Earth does so as infrared rays. The longer wavelength of infrared light makes it less energetic, which makes it hard to capture with existing solar cells.

Researchers have made semiconductor nanocrystals that can convert infrared light to higher-energy visible light with an efficiency of over 5 percent, much higher than methods reported so far. The team could use the converted light to drive a chemical reaction that produces hydrogen fuel from methanol.

Humans could soon communicate with animals, as scientists worldwide are using artificial intelligence to speak to bees, elephants and whales, but one expert fears the power could be used to manipulate the wild species.

Speaking in an interview with Vox, Karen Bakker from the University of British Columbia said a researcher team in Germany is using AI to decode patterns in nonhuman sound, such as the waggle dance of honeybees and the low-frequency noises of elephants, which enables the technology to not just communicate, but also control the wild animals.
