OCR L OCEANENERGY 1224 04If you’ve ever gone surfing or felt seasick or simply watched as the ocean crashed onto shore, you know the power that waves hold. The potentially world-changing question is, can that power be harnessed in a cost-effective way to produce clean, reliable electricity?

Solar and wind dominate discussions about renewable energy. And with only so much land available for such projects, interest in using open seas for floating solar and offshore wind farms is growing. That was on display earlier this month, when the federal government held the first auction for wind farms off the coast of California.

Header shark dronesIt’s 8 a.m. on a sunny 84 degrees Fahrenheit Saturday at Alexandra Headland on the Sunshine Coast of southeast Queensland, Australia. Swimmers porpoise through the shimmering water, while farther offshore surfers straddle their boards in anticipation of the next big wave. If anyone is worried about a shark bite, you wouldn’t know it.

“Not really, probably should,” says 18-year-old surfer Jake Hazelwood of Cairns, a city farther to the north. “When you’re out there, you just zone everything else out.”

Team ChatWe've all seen the headlines lately--there's a good chance that we are entering a recessionary market. During these periods of economic uncertainty, one of the first things many businesses do is pull back on marketing and advertising spending. Marketing is often one of the biggest line items in a business' budget, but in my experience, turning off marketing investment completely isn't the best path to long-term success either, especially if there is an opportunity to gain market share.

Photo: courtesy of Karbon KineticsI love to ride bikes. And I’ve spent a meaningful percentage of my life working in big cities. But I’ve only rarely gotten around urban environments on two wheels. Maybe that’s because bicycles, when you’re not on them, can be a burden. They’re big and bulky, are difficult to meld with other means of transit (such as subways), and aren’t always welcome in offices. They’re also at risk of being stolen if you leave them outside, regardless of how well you’ve locked them up.

Businessman discussing analysis charts or graphs o 2022 08 24 22 45 06 utcBuried in a dusty landfill in Alamogordo, New Mexico, are more than 700,000 discarded Atari game cartridges, including E.T., the 1982 Atari game based on the blockbuster film. This bleak trove of artifacts symbolizes the video game crash of 1983, when consumer demand plummeted and companies like Atari literally dumped their cartridges in the trash.

Why did the popularity of Atari video games rise exponentially only to collapse seemingly overnight? As soon as creative original Atari games like Centipede and Space Invaders hit store shelves, many, many imitations flooded the market.
