With its abilities to target so many types of genetic material, the discovery holds potential for the development of new inexpensive and highly sensitive at-home diagnostic tests for a wide range of infectious diseases, including COVID-19, influenza, Ebola and Zika, according to the authors of a new study in the journal Nature.

P 1 90833734 palm turbinesWind turbines keep getting bigger: One design is three times taller than the Statue of Liberty, with blades that are each as long as a football field. The massive size makes wind energy cheaper to produce. But it also makes it harder to design equipment that can stand up to high winds. Instead of making stronger blades, one team of engineers created blades that can easily bend in a hurricane.

Question mark 2021 08 26 22 30 01 utcIn the past few weeks, I've used ChatGPT, the artificial intelligence chatbot built by OpenAI, to help me research, outline, and write. It's told me jokes, created poems, impersonated me, and even helped me explore a medical issue I was facing.

It's no wonder many are predicting that the A.I. behind ChatGPT will replace Google as the way most people get answers to their most pressing questions.

Because it can be taken orally, it’s much simpler for the patient to stay compliant with his or her treatment. (CREDIT: Creative Commons)Yale researchers have developed an oral medication to treat diabetes that controls insulin levels while simultaneously reversing the inflammatory effects of the disease.

Developed by Tarek Fahmy, associate professor of biomedical engineering and of immunobiology, the drug has two critical advantages over the standard treatment for diabetes. Because it can be taken orally, it’s much simpler for the patient to stay compliant with his or her treatment. It also addresses three major issues with diabetes at the same time: it helps control immediate blood glucose levels, restores pancreatic function, and re-establishes normal immunity in the pancreatic environment.

Building a successful company that goes "all the way" takes grit and determination — and learning from others is one of the best ways to get inspired.

House on a pile of money 2022 06 09 14 00 07 utcThere are various different ways to make hundreds of millions of dollars, but historically "starting a nonprofit" has not been one of them. Silicon Valley, however, has managed to find a way, at ChatGPT creator OpenAI, Axios' Felix Salmon writes.

Why it matters: OpenAI pivoted from nonprofit to for-profit status in 2019, a mere four years after it was founded with $1 billion of donations from Elon Musk and others. It's now reportedly in talks to raise $10 billion from Microsoft, much of which is likely to go straight into shareholders' pockets.

Elderly man seated at a table thinking 2022 12 16 12 35 23 utcMaybe your introverted personality played a part in your decision to start your own business. Perhaps you enjoy hiding behind a laptop instead of having to give scary presentations in front of dozens of colleagues.

But, alas, everyone is talking about how vital it is to build a personal brand these days — and that doesn't sound like a very introverted thing to do.

Chatgpt logoSnap quiz: What was the first TV cartoon? That’s easy: The Flintstones, which debuted on ABC in 1960.

But wait. Eleven years before that, there was NBC’s The New Adventures of Pinocchio, created by Guido Martina and Angelo Bioletto. And Max Fleischer’s The Adventures of Peg o’ the Ring aired way back on April 30, 1933. Even that came after Bray Studios’ 1930 experimental cartoon The Creation, which itself was preceded by 1929’s The Funk Popilin Show.

Though VCs invested record amounts of cash into fintech startups in 2021, per PitchBook data, deal value tumbled in 2022. Many investors predict the funding environment will remain tricky this year, but they’re still super upbeat about the sector: “The opportunity is so large and could dwarf most of software as these business models figure it out,” Jesse Wedler, a general partner at Google parent Alphabet’s independent growth fund, CapitalG, told me on a recent visit to their San Francisco office.

Members pictured from left to right.PHOTOS COURTESY OF THE INDIVIDUAL MEMBERS.When you first start your business, you must essentially build your company culture from the ground up. This can often mean taking the personalities and values of your small team into consideration and also defining what the overall values and mission of the company will be. Failed in business 2021 09 24 03 40 06 utcMany people are ditching the 5-to-9 to be their own boss. Unfortunately, with rare exceptions like Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates and Elon Musk, most entrepreneurs who venture into business fail by year five. Almost 50% of start-ups survive five years or longer, and only 33% survive by year 10.

Most entrepreneurs fail to scale, meaning they do not adapt their leadership style as their business grows. All this may sound awfully discouraging. Yet, entrepreneurs run out of gas because they make one or more common mistakes: targeting the wrong market, choosing a bad location, not having enough capital and ignoring the competition. These are some of the biggest mistakes entrepreneurs should be aware of to improve their chances of success.

Entrepreneurial Development today focuses on finding viable products, promoting them via pitch contests and shark tanks, and funding them with angel capital, and venture capital (VC), i.e., the Product-Angels-VC method, to build a growth venture.

Definition of risk 2022 12 15 21 56 07 utcThreats to the future of democracy look overrated these days, given the glaring leadership weaknesses now evident in Russia, China, and Iran. Add relief that the U.S. midterm election came off with few of the stresses we saw in 2020. And don’t overlook increasingly strong cohesion in EU policymaking.

But there are still important (and growing) risks to preoccupy world leaders, business decisionmakers, and the rest of us in 2023. Here are the ten most important.
