Pet Dog Talent Mammal Theater Stage Fright

It’s not easy getting ready for a big presentation. The stakes can feel high, and in our desire for things to go well, the anticipation builds. Fear, anxiety, or even paralysis can kick in. What can you do to calm your nerves when this happens?

Observe, Accept, and Reframe First, recognize that feeling anxious or being nervous before a big presentation is normal. STEPHANIE VOZZA 10.28.16 5:24 AM If you watched the presidential debates, you may have come to the conclusion that answering questions is optional. If you don’t want to provide an answer, simply insert your own topic and carry on.

I’m from a small town in northern Saskatchewan, where I was raised with a passion for math, tinkering and sports. As a kid, I was obsessed with sports. I competed nationally in junior golf. I played a lot of hockey. At 15, when my parents bought me a Commodore VIC-20, one of the first software projects I wrote was a stats tracker for my high school basketball team. Later, when I followed my passion for math into a career in tech, I still found myself using sports metaphors: It’s about learning from your losses, playing to the final whistle and, most importantly, teamwork.

Coffee Break Conference Women Meeting Office

Unlike startups who are usually just starting out in business, large companies tend to have trading histories and reputations to protect. Part of this reputational equity is captured in the company’s brand. At the same time, innovation involves experimenting with ideas and building minimal viable products. This tension between running innovation experiments and protecting the brand is an expression of the innovation paradox. How well this tension is resolved will determine a company’s ability to innovate successfully. Below are eight ways innovators can test ideas without hurting their company’s brand.

The students at my lecture were particularly attentive this week. Across the audience of some 70 students, not one – that I noticed – checked a smartphone. They scribbled notes. After the lecture, I asked them to spend a few moments talking to their neighbours about what I’d said about the role of universities in meeting the challenges of the 21st century, about the changing dynamics of knowledge creation and the implications for university missions.
