There used to be a reality television show hosted by a certain 2016 presidential candidate called "The Apprentice." The theme song for that show was "For the Love of Money" by Canton's own hit-making R&B group, The O'Jays.

Politics and reality TV aside, money is a necessary part of entrepreneurship. I've had many conversations with entrepreneurs about what they need to move their company forward, and the answer almost always includes financing of some sort. Cash money. Dollar bills. Papes.

If you're not a media wonk, it can be hard to really care about things like the $80 billion deal between AT&T and Time Warner. But you should. You definitely should.

Time Warner has a lot that TV, movies and sports people love. Enjoy Game of Thrones? TW owns HBO. Like the NBA? TW has that on TNT. Into DC Comics movies? TW owns Warner Bros. movies.

Kansas City, Mo. (October 21, 2016) – Today the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation announced the KC Accelerator Challenge, a grant initiative that addresses a key ingredient in Kansas City’s entrepreneurial community – venture accelerators. The Foundation will issue a request for proposals on November 16 during this year’s Global Entrepreneurship Week celebration in Kansas City. Proposals will be due by February 15.

Kauffman Foundation’s research and conversations with business and civic leaders in Kansas City demonstrate the need to close the gap between the local startup community and established resources. Accelerators have a unique capacity to bridge that gap, for example, by enabling large companies searching for innovations to solve particular business problems and providing startups with the access, knowledge and mentorship to succeed.

For a while, Illumina—the 800-pound gorilla of genomics—could do no wrong. The DNA-sequencing company's market cap more than quadrupled from 2012, to peak at a whopping $34 billion, fueled in part by the growing hype around the potential of genomics to transform how we prevent, diagnose, and treat disease, as well as facilitate medical research discoveries.

Illumina is also the primary game in town when it comes to DNA-sequencing machines. It has a near-monopoly in the research market, where its instruments have sequenced an estimated 90% of all the human genomes ever sequenced.
