UCSF and electronics giant Samsung are establishing a center for digital health care innovation, they said Friday, an endeavor that seeks to accelerate the development of mobile technologies for preventive health care.

The lab, to be located on UCSF's Mission Bay campus, will function as a kind of cross-cultural exchange, the rare kind of space where technologists and innovators will be able to validate technologies like smartphone apps or wearable sensors alongside top medical researchers. At the same time, researchers and clinicians will be able to funnel ideas through Samsung designers and engineers.

Several years ago I got one of the early beta invites from Kickstarter and I thought I was SO cool. I could come up with any sort of creative project, get it funded, and quit my day job -- the possibilities were endless! I never could settle on something that seemed worthy of a pitch video, though, and so my initial experience with crowdfunding entailed sending my five precious Kickstarter invites out to creative friends I thought could put them to good use.

The label of “serial entrepreneur” is a point of pride in the start-up world, an indication that this is not your first rodeo. In a survey asking about factors that contributed to their success, entrepreneurs ranked past successes and past failures above everything but prior work experience. Yet new research from from the Centre for European Economic Research casts doubt on that belief. In a recent paper, researchers used survey data to examine the success or failure of 8,400 entrepreneurial ventures in Germany, and whether the founder’s previous experience predicted the outcome. They concluded previously successful entrepreneurs were no more likely to succeed in their next venture, and that previously failed founders were more likely to fail than novice entrepreneurs. These results held even after accounting for education and industry experience.

The American Community Survey has released domestic migration data that was collected over a five year period (2007 to 2011).  There is newer domestic migration data available, such as is annually provided by the Census Bureau's population estimates program, but not in the detail that the latest data provides.

The new release is significant because domestic migration data is provided between each of the nation's more than 3,100 counties. Because the survey was taken over a five-year period, the data represents, in effect, a one-fifth snapshot of domestic migration for each of the years from 2007 to 2011. Each year respondents are asked where they lived a year ago. It is thus a rolling annual figure, rather than a picture of a single year.

Tech luminaries are often drawn from the ranks of the already affluent. Mark Zuckerberg was the son of an upper-middle-class dentist. Bill Gates was technically a millionaire before he even started Microsoft in 1975. Larry Page's parents were both professors; Sergey Brin's father was a professor and his mother was a NASA researcher.

So there I was, exhausted at the end of a long work day, frustrated by a particularly stressful drive home and contemplating pouring a stiff bourbon and withering away on the couch for a couple hours.

Then something happened.

My habits took over.

You see, I had “programmed” the habit of exercising every day at 6 p.m. into my brain.

The amount of debris in the ocean is growing exponentially, becoming more and more hazardous and harmful to marine life and therefore also to our ocean food source. Measuring and tracking the movements of such debris are still in their infancy. The driftage generated by the tragic 2011 tsunami in Japan gave scientists Nikolai Maximenko and Jan Hafner a unique chance to learn about the effects of the ocean and wind on floating materials as they move across the North Pacific Ocean.

Capitol Hill

An entrepreneurial culture is alive and well in the nation's capital, bolstered by a wave of successful startups of various shapes and sizes that are creating jobs and improving the world. In pursuing continued economic growth that is not dependent upon federal funds, the D.C. community must focus on encouraging and supporting more entrepreneurs. One clear path to accelerating the evolution of a startup culture, highlighted by the University of Maryland's recent recognition as the top public university for technology entrepreneurship in the 2013 StartEngine College Index, is through our local institutions of higher education. Their curricula, access to space and technology, and vast alumni networks make universities the perfect home for entrepreneurship, and their efforts to create a new generation of entrepreneurs need our community's support.

Bruce Booth, the biotech venture capitalist known for his social media savvy, sent a Tweet last month that caught my eye. He tweeted in reference to the number of academic spinoffs reported in the 2012 AUTM Licensing Survey Report, “What % biotech? My bet, ~ half.”

Extrapolating from Top U.S. universities, institutes for life sciences in 2012 and AUTM data, perhaps 63 percent of academic startups formed in 2012 were biotech or in “life sciences.”  Working from a set of 639 startups, that would equate to 402 biotech startups formed in 2012.
